Telecommuting Lifestyles

A glimpse inside our wonderful telecommuting lifestyle…

I have a telecommuting job.

For the first time since she was born, I can now be there for my daughter. When she's sick, guess what, I’m there for her. As a bonus I never feel guilty about wanting to be a great parent anymore. I don’t have to live in fear of losing my job to take care of my family.

My cocker spaniel sleeps beside my desk all day. When I feel bored or lonely or too intense, I look into her beautiful, pouty face and feel all happy inside. I don’t think I could ever have an office job again that didn’t let me bring my best friend along.

I’ve made good time today so when I get done early I’m going to get myself a huge cappuccino at the designer coffee place and drink it out on the patio. Yes, you heard right. I leave work whenever I darn well feel like it. For the record, I also work whenever I darn well feel like it.

I won’t be standing in line very long at the designer coffee place because while everyone else is slaving at their desks, I’m enjoying driving on streets that have no traffic and standing in lines that are, well, actually, I never stand in lines anymore!

I’m flexible, but most of the time I start working while I’m still groggy in the morning, sipping my delicious, freshly-brewed coffee. Before I know it I’ve knocked out a whole hour of work without even knowing it. My desk is about thirty feet from where I brushed my teeth this morning.  I often work in my bedroom slippers.

When my office buddies stop to daydream they stare at fluorescent lighting and inspirational posters designed to make them work harder. This morning I took a pause to watch two squirrels chase each other around my oak tree. The weather is nice so my window is cracked. While I breathe life-giving fresh air, my old office buddies are passing each other viruses and germs that are cultivated and distributed through the central A/C system. Who knows what used to be live in those A/C ducts!

I don’t worry anymore that my house is burning down or getting burglarized while I sit in boring office meetings and I enjoy being able to be home anytime I need something installed, repaired or delivered.

I must say I am completely comfortable working at home. I love my telecommuting job.

I work when I want and push myself to what ever level is comfortable on any given day. I am in control of my own destiny and I like it.

My boss, wait, uh, one moment, do I have a boss? I don’t know. It’s been so long since I’ve spoken to him, I mean her.

Obviously, I have no boss stress.

I also have no commuting-in-rush-hour stress. No “I have nothing to wear” stress. No “I have a run in my stocking” stress. No “I dribbled mayonnaise on my dress at lunch” stress. No “God, is it ever going to be 5:00?” stress and no “How am I going to get to work with my car in the shop?” stress. I know there are many other stresses that I don’t have but frankly, I’m so relaxed from working in the comfort of my own home and watching the wildlife out my window that I can’t remember them.

In Winter I can sit beside the fire anytime I like. In summer I can go outside and garden, anytime I like. My husband and I aren’t at each other’s throats anymore from being overworked and overextended. We have balance in our lives again.

Life is very good.

I love my telecommuting job.
