Developing your Own Telecommuting Strategy

If you're not already a telecommutig professional who can enjoy working in the comfort of their own home, no doubt you'll want to get started as soon as possible!

We hope this Action Plan helps you get the results you seek.

1. Determine how much money you will have to or will want to make on your telecommuting job to replace that outside job you currently have. After you adjust your lifestyle to reduce day care costs, travel and auto expense, the professional wardrobe and all the dry cleaning bills that may go with it -- and then you factor in any tax benefits you may be able to take advantage of when you have a telecommuting job and work at home -- you may find that you can dramatically reduce the amount of money you have to make to break even.  There is a website that publishes a fun, informative and easy-to-take test that will tell you how much you're actually earning on your current job. You may be surprised! To take the test click here.

2. Once you know how much money you must really make to remain the same or get ahead financially in your new lifestyle, you know what type of salary range to look for in your new telecommuting job. Remember that when become a telecommuting professional you may become an independent contractor.  This will give you certain freedoms, independence and tax consequences and you may no longer be eligible for certain benefits, such as health insurance, as an independent contractor.  Discuss these changes with your employer and an accountant or attorney who can properly advise you.

3. Prepare your home and family for your new telecommuting job.  Discuss the changes with your family, reach agreement on how your lives and individual responsibilities will change. Prepare your work area so that you can work at your new telecommuting job productively and efficiently.

4. After you know the telecommuting lifestyle is for you and you and your family are ready for the change, that's the time to find your telecommuting job and get started.
